Ahhh, summer. The season of sunshine and fun is officially here. To celebrate, Milk On My Mind has curated a list of crafts that you and your family can create together from things like empty, rinsed-out milk jugs and cartons. These non-traditional summertime crafts and games can be made with just a few easily accessible materials.
Whale Jug
What better way to celebrate the summer than with a craft made for the water? Whether you bring it to the bathtub or poolside, this milk-jug-turned-whale is bound to bring gallons of fun to any summer day.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Empty, rinsed milk jug
- Sharpie/permanent marker
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Glitter
Step 1:
Take an empty milk jug and rinse it out completely. Keep the cap on so that your whale can hold water.
Step 2:
Using a sharpie, draw a mouth (triangular-shaped) on the bottom of the empty milk jug.
Step 3:
Cut along the lines to create an opened mouth.
Step 4:
With the sharpie, give your whale an eye, eyebrow, and fin. Then use the glue stick to apply some glitter to make your whale shine.

Watering Can
Continuing our water-related craft trend, you can use an empty milk jug to create a no-brainer, easy-peasy watering can. The difference between this homemade watering can and a store-bought version is that these are easy-to-fill, pour, and carry – because the cap stays on, you won’t lose a drop of water and your hungry plants will be perfectly pleased.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Empty, rinsed milk jug
- Needle (thickness of your choosing depending on how strong you want the stream of water)
- Matches
Step 1:
As always, take an empty milk jug and rinse it out completely.
Step 2:
Remove the cap.
Step 3:
Light a match and briefly heat the end of your needle. Then carefully poke holes through the cap.
Step 4:
Fill and get watering. If there isn’t enough water coming out, you can always add more holes.
Note: If you are doing this with children, offer them the option to decorate their watering cans.

Milk Jug Ball Catchers
Care to have a catch? DIY your new favorite summer game with these milk jug ball catchers.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 empty, rinsed milk jugs
- Scissors
- Craft/colored tape
- Markers
- Newspaper or a small ball of your choosing
Step 1:
Rinse out both empty milk jugs so there is no residue.
Step 2:
Cut off the bottoms of the milk jugs. Clean the insides well.
Step 3:
Use the craft/colored tape to cover the edges of each milk jug so they don’t fray or cut you. Decorate the jug with markers, stickers, and glitter.
Step 4:
Crumple up a newspaper (or use your own small-sized ball) and wrap it in craft tape. Toss, catch, and enjoy!
